|"Tōrō nagashi" or flowing lanterns, was started to mourn the spirits of those who lost their lives at the Sumida river during incidents such as the Great Kanto Earthquake and the firebombing of Tokyo during World War II.
The lanters which are set afloat at Sumida river, with prayers for peace, is a sight to behold. A famous seasonal tradition of summer in Asakusa which many visitors come to see from around the world.
